Frequently asked Questions

Sometimes our customers have questions. We answer.

What exactly is VoIP?

VoIP is an acronym for Voice Over Internet Protocol, or in more common terms phone service over the Internet. If you have a reasonable quality Internet connection you can get phone service delivered through your Internet connection instead of from your local phone company. Using a VoIP system has many benefits for your business. Cheaper calls, elimination of back-office equipment, and it's portable - just to name a few.

VoIP also gives you the ability to talk to other employees in remote or satellite offices completely without charge. Any user configured on your account can be called using a short "extension" number - anywhere in the world where there is a sufficient internet connection. User's who move from office to office can also 'log-in' to any phone on the account using Voigo's Hot-Desking feature - given your employee even more flexibility.

VoIP has been named the most successful technology of the last decade and is the best choice for companies looking to lower telecommunication costs and take advantage of all the enhanced features that we provide.

How much bandwidth do I need?

The bandwidth that our Hosted Voice Service requires depends on the number of factors. Existing network usage and the number of concurrent calls you want to make, all need to be considered. Since your call data is being transferred over the internet, it is imperative to ensure your office has the proper level of bandwidth available to handle not only this information, but any other data being transferred from standard internet usage all around the office. A typical VoIP call will consume roughly 95 kilobits (kbps) of both upload and download bandwidth – but the upload speed is key to your phone call quality. Without proper bandwidth and upload speed to push the data out, your calls can suffer from jitters or interruptions.

A word about static IPs: While we recommend your network have a static IP, it is not required. Voigo employs a IP Blocking Scheme, so if any of your offices do not have static IP addresses, you will be required to setup and maintain a DDNS service for those locations that have dynamic IP addresses.

We can't talk about bandwidth, without taking about your local network infrastructure. Proper premise wiring, network switches and routers should all need to be 'business' or 'enterprise' class to ensure your VoIP system will perform properly.

If you're unsure about your network, don't worry, Voigo will test your network to make sure your Hosted Voice Service will perform as expected. We'll make suggestions on how or what to upgrade, if needed.

What if I need to add employees?

With traditional PBX systems, where you have a system sitting in your office somewhere, adding new employees may mean you need to add harward ports and specialized equipment to get those users up and running. Some legacy PBX systems also require additional licenses as well, driving up costs.

Voigo's Hosted Voice makes it easy to add employees. Since our platform is highly scalable, and hosted in the cloud, just let us know how many users to add, pick the phones you would like to use, and we'll add the new users to your account and ship the phones to you completely configured and ready to go.

How can I keep my existing phone numbers?

Voigo is not only your Hosted Voice platform provider, we are also your carrier offering local and long distance services. Your existing numbers will be 'ported' (moved) to our carrier network to route incoming calls to your account. This insures that you can keep your existing telephone numbers, as they are your customer's lifeline to your company. During the process of porting, you should setup call forwarding on all your existing phone numbers so you can start using your new Hosted Voice account as soon as it is installed.
